CITI Training

The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program provides research ethics education to the research community. The CITI program offers both basic (initial) and refresher courses covering human subjects research and HIPAA requirements. Additionally, optional Good Clinical Practice (GCP) modules are available for completion or recertification.

Choose the scenario which applies to you for further instruction:

if you have not taken the CITI Course before:

  1. Go to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) web site.
  2. Click “Register Here”.  Complete Registration Steps 1-7.

Note: in Step 1, select Northwestern University from the first dropdown box titled "Participating Institutions”.  Failure to select Northwestern University will prevent access to the correct NU education modules.
Select "Northwestern University" from Participating Institutions

  3. Complete the required fields in the demographic profile and provide accurate contact information to facilitate ongoing communication of continuing education requirements (i.e. CITI Refresher Course).   Click Submit. Please note that when registering you will be asked to provide the following:
    • An employee ID number: While this field is not needed for Northwestern, it is a fixed field in CITI. Therefore, please enter the ID number on your Northwestern issued wildcard or any five numbers (e.g. “12345”).
    • An email address: While a university email address is preferable, a personal email address can be used but you must ensure that the email you use is both accurate and the same as your eIRB profile. If the information is incorrect, it may cause a delay in updating your training information.
  4. Select the course you need to complete.
    • Skip questions 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6.
    • Complete Question 3 which pertains to Human Subjects Research.  Select “Biomedical Research Group” to complete the biomedical course, or “Social Science and Behavioral Science (SBS) Research” to complete the SBS course.
    • Click Submit.
  5. In the table titled “My Courses,” the selected course should appear.  Begin your course by clicking on the red link "Incomplete - Re-Enter."
  6. After completion of all the modules and if you correctly answered 70% of the quiz questions for the required modules, you will be able to download a Course Completion Report. This report is a transcript and will provide a detailed record of your accomplishments. NOTE: The NU IRB Office does not issue certificates of CITI training completion. You are strongly advised to retain a paper copy of the certificate for your records.

The IRB Office will be notified that your training has been completed. If you have registered in eIRB, the IRB office will then update your profile in eIRB to reflect completion of CITI training.  If you have not registered in eIRB, please see the eIRB registration instructions.

If you need to take the refresher course

Follow these instructions if you have taken the CITI course before and need to take the refresher course (per policy every 3 years).  Please note that after 3 refreshers, CITI will require that the Basic course be completed again.

  1. Go to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) web site.
  2. Log in with your existing user name and password- this will take you to the main menu
  3. For NU users, CITI will automatically add the "Refresher" course to your list of courses 90 days before your CITI Training expires.  To complete the Refresher course before this time, contact the IRB Office at irbtraining@northwestern.edu to arrange this with CITI.
  4. Begin your course by clicking on the red link "Incomplete - Re-Enter"

If you have registered in eIRB, the IRB office will then update your profile in eIRB to reflect completion of CITI refresher training. If you have not registered in eIRB, please see the eIRB registration instructions.
