Conducting Research at Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Collaborative Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center (JBVAMC) / Northwestern University / University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Institutional Review Board is responsible for reviewing human subject research of investigators with joint NU and JBVAMC appointments. If the study will be conducted at the JBVAMC, involves JBVAMC patients, staff and volunteers or uses JBVAMC resources it must be reviewed by the Collaborative IRB.

New Protocols
The process of creating and submitting a new study submission is the same as submitting a study to the NU IRB Office; however, the following differences may occur:
- All deferred, pending and approval letters will be on UIC letterhead. Consent forms will contain an NU IRB approval stamp.
- An approval letter is sent for all submissions, including those requiring expedited review.
- Note: Piper Hawkins-Green, from the NU IRB office, will be copied on all correspondence.

Studies Involving Radiation
If a study involves radiation procedures to be performed on human subjects at the Jesse Brown facility, submit an application to the JBVAMC Radiation Safety Officer prior to submitting it to the IRB. The Radiation Safety Officer completes a Human Research Protocol Radiation Dose Supplement form and provides VA specific consent language.

Continuing Review Submissions
Continuing reviews must be submitted 90 days prior to expiration in order to avoid lapse in approval. Use the most current VA consent form template, VA Authorization template, and VA supplemental documents which are all available on the UIC web site.
