I’m excited to announce that, following an extensive national search, Nathalia Henry will be joining the Office for Research as the new Executive Director of the Institutional Review Board Office (IRB Office). Nathalia comes to Northwestern from the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) where she served as the Research Associate Compliance Officer and Human Protections Administrator for the past 4 years. Previously, Nathalia served in several research compliance and operational roles across various research environments, including as the Manager of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Office of Research and at Pharmacia-Pfizer.
With this new position, Nathalia is returning to Northwestern University, having worked from 2003-2006 as an IRB Senior Coordinator and then IRB Manager. In that capacity, she supported both biomedical and social/behavioral research across the Northwestern campuses. She also served for 8 years as a Northwestern IRB panel member. During Nathalia’s years working at Northwestern and with our clinical affiliates, she has built thriving relationships across the research enterprise.
Nathalia obtained her Masters of Science degree in molecular biology, microbiology and biochemistry from Southern Illinois University, where she began her research career at the basic science laboratory bench. She transitioned away from the laboratory in 2001 to pursue her interests in the evolving human research regulatory environment, with a focus on drug development, ethical research conduct and the translation of research discoveries from bench to bedside. Nathalia is a Certified Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC) professional.
I owe a huge thanks to Kathleen Murphy, Evanston IRB Office Manager, who agreed to serve as Interim Executive Director during the search. Kathleen took on these additional responsibilities with impressive enthusiasm and dedication. She is a role model in her tireless commitment to the IRB Office, OR and the University. Kathleen’s continued wisdom and guidance will be invaluable during the leadership transition.
Nathalia will assume her duties October 12, 2017. Please join me in welcoming her!
