Social and behavioral science (SBS) projects go to the social and behavioral sciences office and are reviewed by members of Panel E. Panel E reviewers have the appropriate expertise to review social behavioral studies that also include medical procedures but not FDA-regulated research, which must be reviewed by a biomedical panel at NU.
Before you begin your application for IRB review, please review the "New Study" section which will walk you through the IRB review process.
General Time frames for review of projects by the SBS IRB:
- Exempt projects will take approximately one week for initial review. If there are no changes required, the project will be approved at that time.
- Expedited projects will be pre-reviewed within one week and researchers are notified if there are changes needed. Expedited reviewers have two weeks to complete their review. If additional changes are needed, it can take longer.
- Full board projects are pre-reviewed in the office. Once all requested changes are made, the project is assigned to a Panel E full board meeting. Full board meetings generally take place on the fourth Friday of the month except for November, December and possibly Spring break depending on when it occurs. The deadline for submission of full board projects to Panel E is three weeks prior to each meeting date.
If you have any questions, please contact the office staff. Also, regular drop-in hours are held Mondays and Thursdays, 2:00-4:00pm in Chambers Hall, room 234, except during intersession.
