Staff Announcements: August 2022

 Yasmeen Khan, IRB Compliance Analyst, Compliance and Education

We are pleased to welcome Yasmeen Khan to the IRB Office as IRB Compliance Analyst.

Yasmeen has been with the university for many years, coming to us most recently from FSM’s Department of Radiology, where she worked as a Regulatory Coordinator since 2019. There she provided IRB and regulatory support for faculty investigators and was key in establishing the department’s electronic consent process. Prior to that, she was a Business Coordinator within Northwestern’s Institute on Complex Systems (NICO) and was an Administrative Assistant within our very own Office for Research Integrity. Yasmeen has a Master of Science in Law from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma. We are confident that Yasmeen will be an outstanding addition to our growing team!

John Munoz, IRB Analyst, Biomedical 

We are pleased to welcome John Munoz to the IRB Office as IRB Analyst.

John is coming to us from Northwestern’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) where he worked as a Coordinator since 2019. There he conducted pre-reviews of a variety of submissions and provided support to departments and members of the committee. Prior to that John worked for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as an Agriculture Commodity Grader to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements in matters relating to plant operations and consumer protections. John has a Masters of Science in Animal Science and Bachelors of Science in Pre-Veterinary Sciences and Research, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  We are looking forward to see John thrive in the realm of human subjects research protections and support of the IRB’s mission.

Anthony (Logan) Clary, IRB Reliance Analyst, Reliance 

We are pleased to welcome Logan Clary to the IRB Office as IRB Reliance Analyst.

Logan joins us from Virginia Commonwealth University’s HRPP where he worked as an IRB Reliance Coordinator. There he collaborated with investigators, HRPP colleagues, and external institutions as they navigated reliance processes. He is well versed in reliance-related federal regulations, Single IRB considerations, SMART IRB, and best practices for reliance. Prior to joining the VCU HRPP he held various administrative roles in the VCU Department of Sociology. Logan also holds Bachelor degree in Sociology and Anthropology from North Carolina State University and a Masters degree in Sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

As a member of the Reliance Team, Logan will assist the Northwestern research community in maintaining compliance with institutional policies and federal regulations surrounding reliance, while also serving as the liaison for all key stakeholders.

Monica Kane, IRB Reliance Analyst Lead, Reliance 

We are pleased to announce that Monica Kane will assume the role of IRB Reliance Analyst Lead.

Monica has over nine years of experience in human research, with the past two years spent within the Northwestern IRB Office.  Over the past two years with the IRB Office, Monica has led efforts to enhance a number of reliance resources for the research community and IRB staff and processing of countless reliance reviews in eIRB+.  She serves as a wellness representative for the office providing support to all IRB staff as we conduct our day-to-day activities.  Monica also single-handedly led efforts for the complete overhaul of the IRB website. 

As a member of the IRB Office leadership team, Monica will work closely with colleagues to support the mission of Northwestern University’s Human Research Protection Program and share in the responsibility for the success of the IRB Office in accomplishing its strategic goals. Monica’s primary focus will continue to be reliance as the team continues to expand with the blossoming of the Northwestern IRBs reliance portfolio.

Monica holds a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Art History from Case Western Reserve University and a Masters of Public Health with a major in Epidemiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Monica also obtained a Pharmacoepidemiology certification from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Edeth Engel, Senior IRB Analyst, Social and Behavioral 

We are pleased to announce that Edeth Engel will assume the role of Senior IRB Analyst.

Edeth has been a Biomedical IRB Analyst since 2020.  Edeth has been involved with several special projects, including updates to guidance documents and templates.  She is part of the website workgroup and co-lead of FAIR (Fostering Accessibility and Inclusivity in Research).  She has played a key role with Panel Q and has assisted with all the biomedical panel meetings.  Edeth received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Prior to that Edeth worked as a Study Coordinator at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.  Edeth also worked on other research studies at NU and University of Chicago.   In these roles she worked on social behavioral research and biomedical research.  Her experience gives her a valuable perspective and understanding of the research community’s needs.  Edeth will be a great addition to the SBR Team and knowledgeable resource for the research community.
