Northwestern Affiliates & Chicagoland Partners
Northwestern University has established reliance agreements with Northwestern affiliates, Lurie Children’s Hospital IRB, and other Chicagoland partners. If you have any questions about these partnership please reach out to irbreliance@northwestern.edu.
Northwestern Affiliates
Northwestern Memorial HealthCare
Regulatory oversight is provided by the Northwestern University IRB for Northwestern Memorial Healthcare Corporation (NMHC, which includes Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Prentice Women’s Hospital and other Northwestern Medicine affiliates) by an established Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions. If Northwestern University (i.e. a Northwestern faculty member) is involved in research at/by NMHC then the research is covered under this MOU and Northwestern University and NMHC are one site. NMHC only operates independently if Northwestern University is uninvolved in the research.
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab
Regulatory oversight is provided by the Northwestern University IRB for Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (SRALab) by an established Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions. If Northwestern University (i.e. a Northwestern faculty member) is involved in research at/by SRAlab then the research is covered under this MOU and Northwestern University and SRAlab are one site.

Chicagoland Partners
Lurie Children’s Hospital IRB
Lurie Children’s Hospital and the Northwestern IRB have a signed Master Reliance Agreement that allows collaboration for the review of studies impacting both Lurie Children’s Hospital and Northwestern University. This agreement is specific to studies where Northwestern will cede review to Lurie Children's. Below are the points to consider as you determine the most appropriate IRB to review your research:
Points to Consider
- If your research activity will involve only Lurie Children’s Hospital and the funding is processed through the Lurie Children’s Hospital OSP, please contact the LCH IRB to submit your study in Cayuse. No submission to Northwestern is necessary.
- If your study will be conducted only at Northwestern University and/or Northwestern affiliates and the funding is processed through the Northwestern University Office for Sponsored Research (OSR), contact the Northwestern IRB to submit your study in eIRB+.
- If your study involves research activity at both sites and/or has funding through Northwestern University but research activity at Lurie Children’s Hospital, your study may be reviewed by the Lurie Children’s Hospital IRB. This will require an abbreviated CIRB submission in Northwestern’s eIRB+ system and a full submission in Lurie Children’s Hospital Cayuse system.
- If you study involves activities and/or funding that does not match the scenarios described above, consider contacting both Northwestern and Lurie Children's Hospital to troubleshoot which IRB should serve as the IRB of Record.
